The Seal of Climate Literacy is a certification given by a local education provider (LEP) to students who have studied principles of climate literacy and demonstrated their understanding of these principles through hands-on learning by or before their high school graduation.
The skills gained through this certification pave the way for empowering students to thrive in a rapidly evolving environment. By integrating local climate-related challenges into the curriculum, partnering with local experts, and providing hands-on training and community engagement opportunities, the Seal of Climate Literacy prepares students for a future grounded in resilience.
Colorado’s Seal of Climate Literacy, championed by Lyra, began its journey as Senate Bill 24-014 and was signed into law by Governor Polis on May 23rd. Born from grassroots engagement and community building, this initiative addresses the historic need for environmental awareness and education to enable youth statewide to address the impacts of a changing climate on environmental and economic resiliency. The bill was sponsored by Colorado Senator Chris Hansen (District 31) and Colorado Representative Barbara McLachlan (District 59) and garnered widespread support. Nearly 20 students from around the state called in and journeyed to the capitol to testify at the House Education Committee in support of the legislation.
The impacts of climate change in Colorado necessitate swift action and adaptation across the state. Youth, particularly in rural areas, will bear the brunt of these impacts, affecting their well-being, opportunities, and communities. The Seal of Climate Literacy empowers young people, regardless of their future paths, to become informed and capable leaders in navigating the challenges and opportunities presented by a changing climate.
